| Delft University
of Technology is the largest, oldest, most complete university of
technology in the Netherlands. For more than 150 years numerous
scientists and students have worked her on the most modern developments
in the field of technology. The University of Technology in Delft
has a national and international reputation of the quality of its
scientific research and university teaching. The university employs
more than 5,000 people and has approximately 13,500 registered students.
TRAIL
The Netherlands Research School for Transport, Infrastructure and
Logistics
TRAIL is a joint post-graduate Research School of the Delft University
of Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam and the University of
Groningen. TRAIL officially started on 1 January 1994 as the Netherlands
Research School for Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics in which
specialist faculties of the three universities participate. There
are currently more than 230 researchers active at TRAIL, of which
100 qualifying for Ph.D. level.

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY
Logistics Engineering
The field of activity of the Logistic Engineering group covers
the coordination, control and design of transport systems from the
transport market, transport units and means of transport through
to the design of the infrastructure. It encompasses the integral
functional aspects, the processes in the transport chain, the coordination
of the transport processes and the control of the means of transport.
Design is a main issue in the research field. Warehouses and distribution
centers, including their layout and engineering design also fall
within this area.
Typical fields of application are intermodal transport, terminals
and distribution centers. Important developments include the use
of robots and telemetric coordination. Important aspects in logistic
design are functionality, process dynamics, communication, control,
industrial reliability, technical feasibility and economic exploitation.
The Logistic Engineering section has facilities and software available:
computers and software for the development of control technology,
the execution of design studies and simulations.
Within the faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology
work is also carried out in cooperation with the department of Marine
Technology and the department of Measurement and Control.
The Logistic Engineering section participates in the TRAIL Research
School.

ITT Integrated Inter- and Intra Terminal Transport
The expansion of container terminals and the increasing number of
terminals causes a tremendous increase of container exchange between
locations of one terminal and also between different terminals.
The project includes the design and performance analysis of systems
for co-ordination, capacity allocation and traffic control of automated
container transport on terminals and in terminal networks. The application
area is the "Maasvlakte", "Eem/Waalhaven", "Gorinchem",
"Haaglanden" and "Amsterdam".
