The Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education was founded in 1943. It is a private institution without political or religious affiliations.

It has 29 campuses in Mexico, a student enrollment of nearly 80,070 and a faculty of 6,201.

The Monterrey Tech's Mission is:
To educate students to be individuals who are committed to the social, economic and political development of their communities and to be internationally competitive in their professional fields; and
To carry out research and extension relevant to Mexico's sustainable development
The Monterrey Tech is linked by a computer network and encourages faculty and students to use the computer and telecommunication networks for academic purposes.

The Monterrey Tech System includes the Virtual University, which provides classes via satellite for institutions in Mexico, and Central and South America.
